Travel Directions
DIRECTIONS to Nevada Studio: From the I-74,
take Lincoln Ave. exit south. You will cross major streets: Bradley, University,
Springfield, and Green Streets, before reaching the stop sign at Nevada street.
Turn right on Nevada. The Dance Studio building (905 W. Nevada) is a large
grey structure on the left, a few houses down from the corner. The Dance Administration
building (907 1/2 W. Nevada) is next to the dance studio, partially hidden
behind an old house.
Metered parking is available on Nevada Street. Quarters are required for almost
all of the meters, and cost .75 per hour. On the weekends parking in any campus
lot, including the underground parking at the Krannert Center, is free! Street
parking requires money every day except Sunday.
DIRECTIONS to Krannert Center: From
the I-74, take Lincoln Ave. exit south. You will cross major streets: Bradley,
University, Springfield, and Green Streets, before reaching Oregon St. Turn
right on Oregon and proceed two blocks west to Krannert Center (KCPA) where
you can park in the underground parking facility. The audition will be held
in the Dance Rehearsal Room on Level 2 (Production Level). The elevator floor
indicators will show you how to get to Level 2. Take the elevator at the south
end of the building. When you have reached Level 2, walk to your right along
the hallway until you reach the first left turn. Turn there; you will see
a large painted mural on the wall at the end of that hallway. The Registration
area and the Dance Rehearsal Studio will be just to your right.
Visitors' Center (First Floor, Levis Faculty
Center): The University Visitors' Center, located in the Levis Faculty Center,
(about three blocks from the Dance Dept. and across the street from the east
side of Krannert Center) serves to orient prospective students and their families
to the campus. The Center produces an orientation program that includes a
slide show at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each weekday. This is followed by a
tour of the Quad and the Illinois Street Residence Hall complex. Orientation
activities conclude about 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. The Visitors' Center is located
in the Levis Faculty Center. You may wish to stay an extra day to take advantage
of this program.
DRESSING ROOMS:
There are lockers, showers and dressing rooms in the Nevada Studio Building
and in the Dance Rehearsal Studio in Krannert Center, but we cannot provide
towels or locks for the lockers. If you wish to shower or use a locker, please
come prepared! Please leave valuables at home, or bring them with you into
the studio.
Frequently Asked Questions about the auditioning
for the Dance Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The first requirement is that you must have submitted a completed application
to the University, and requested the transmittal of all scores & grades,
before you attend the audition.
The audition (November 14, 2008), w/Open House on Nov. 15, or February 6,
2009, with open house on Feb. 7) consists of technique class in Modern,
technique class in Ballet, a jazz combination, and presentation of a self-choreographed
original solo, 1-3 minutes in length, that should fall into one of the following
styles: Modern, Ballet, or Jazz. Dancers should provide their own music, either
on tape or CD. Clothing should be leotards and tights, any color or style,
allowing the faculty to see your body. No dangling jewelry or loose hair,
please. You will need ballet slippers for the ballet class, and bare feet
for the modern class. Jazz shoes are optional for the jazz combination. The
auditions run from 9 a.m. (you should arrive WELL before that) until approximately
1:30 p.m. on the Saturday. There is no formal warm-up class.
**Please view this solo as a chance to show us your creativity, not an opportunity to hightlight your technical skills.
We also have audition dates on March 2, 2009. However, this auditions is formatted
slightly differently, depending on the number of auditionees. There is no
open house in conjunction with the March audition.
We strongly recommend the Open House day for all auditioning students. By
attending the Open House you can take entry-level majors' classes, view upper-level
classes, speak with the BFA program director, meet the current students, and
have your name sent to the Krannert Center for Performing Arts Box Office
so that you can receive a free ticket to the corresponding Departmental Performance,
(November Dance in the fall, February Dance in February). Accompanying
family members may contact the Krannert Center for Performing Arts box office
to order discounted tickets. The discount can be claimed by telling the box
office staff that you are accompanying an auditioning Dance student.
The only paperwork we require from you on the day of the audition can be downloaded
from the Department website. You can find it under the heading Undergraduate
Program, and then Forms. Download the 'Undergraduate Audition Response Form',
print it out and complete it, and bring it with you to the audition.
Regarding our scholarships, they are talent-based, rather than need-based,
and there is no 'average' amount; they vary considerably. Students who are
awarded a scholarship are guaranteed to receive that award throughout their
time in the program, provided they keep their GPA up and fulfill the other
scholarship requirements. The November and February auditions automatically
enter a student into consideration for this Talented Student Tuition Award.
As their name indicates, these scholarships are tuition-specific, meaning
that rather than cash in hand, the scholarship represents an amount that will
be subtracted from the student's tuition bill.
Any more questions? Please contact the BFA Program Director, Prof. Linda Lehovec,
at lehovec@uiuc.edu.
