Can I include a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope with my application materials so that they can be returned after the audition process is over?
Application materials are not returnable. Please do not send a postage-paid envelope.
Is the GRE required?
The GRE is not required for admission into the MFA program.
Can I apply for admission in the Spring semester?
Students cannot begin coursework in the Spring semester.
I cannot travel to campus during the audition dates. Can I do a video audition instead?
Auditionees must audition in person on the listed audition dates. We cannot accept students into the program unless we have the opportunity to evaluate them in person.
Are there any scholarships available for travel to the audition?
A small amount of funding is available to subsidize travel costs. The funds will be awarded based on evaluation of auditionee video, and will be done as a reimbursement after the audition is over. All auditionees are automatically considered for the scholarship and will be contacted via email if chosen to receive funding.
I don’t want to teach, do I still have to submit the electronic Teaching Application?
Yes, you must complete all six steps listed on the Application Checklist in order to be considered for admission.
I don’t want to apply for the GV/MC position, do I still have to submit the electronic GV/MC application?
Yes, you must complete all six steps listed on the Application Checklist in order to be considered for admission.
I don’t want to apply for the Office Assistant position, do I still have to submit the electronic Office Assistant application?
Yes, you must complete all six steps listed on the Application Checklist in order to be considered for admission.
I don’t have Internet access, can I get a paper application?
You are strongly recommended to complete your application online. If you cannot do so, please email mfa-admissions@illinois.edu
Where can I stay while auditioning on campus?
Many students choose to stay at either the Illini Union hotel or the Hampton Inn. Both are within walking distance of campus. For more information on your trip see
How will I get from my hotel to campus?
If you would prefer not to walk, bus service is available through the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District.
Is there a page limit for the Personal/Artist’s Statement?
No. Each individual should determine the proper length.
How long should my dvd be?
Length is not as important as what you include. Use your own judgment about what best represents you as a choreographer. At least two full-length works are desireable.

Do I need to audition to get into the MFA program?
An on-campus audition is required for admission into the MFA program.
If I cannot attend the audition dates listed on the Website, can I schedule a special audition?
Because our audition activities are centered around the department’s February concert, we cannot schedule special auditions.
Are musicians used for dance technique classes?
Yes. Live musicians accompany all majors technique courses.
What performance opportunities are offered to students?
Students can audition for the department’s five main-stage productions per year, along with site-specific works and additional student projects.
