Sample Schedules

As a dance major, your schedule will consist of a combination of dance technique classes, improvisation/composition classes, dance academics, general education courses and rehearsals.

Freshmen typically take 2-3 general education courses each semester, 7-10 dance technique classes per week (including ballet, modern, and an elective), Orientation to Dance (fall) or Improvisation I (spring), and rehearse in 1 or 2 projects. See a sample freshman schedule below.

During the sophomore year students take a similar schedule, although each semester they have both a dance academic and an improvisation/composition class.

By the junior year the number of general education courses usually decreases while the dance academics increase. It is not unusual to have up to 6 - 9 hours of rehearsals per week.

By the senior year most students have completed their general education requirements and devote most of their time to their dance studies, including leading their own rehearsals for their choreographic thesis project.  See a sample senior schedule below.

Although the minimum requirement is 7 technique classes a week, the schedule is designed to allow up to 10 technique classes a week, giving students the opportunity to train more intensively. In addition to the required course work there is a wide array of elective courses both within the Dance Department and in the University at large that students choose from to augment their curriculum.
